Reduce the environmental impact of your Christmas tree
This year, we've teamed up with various Christmas tree retailers and garden centres across Surrey to encourage residents to donate £3 to plant a new tree in Surrey. Every year, thousands of us decorate real Christmas trees as an essential and much-loved tradition during the festive season. To support the environment, Surrey is asking you to donate £3, when you buy your Christmas tree, which will be used to plant new trees locally. Visit the Surrey Wildlife Trust website to donate.
All money raised will go to planting trees in Surrey, as part of the council's commitment to facilitate the planting of 1.2million trees by 2030, in order to help prevent climate change and bring a wealth of benefits to our residents and local biodiversity. The initiative is a partnership with Surrey County Council and Surrey Wildlife Trust.
Participating retailers include Squires Garden Centres, Hans Christmas Anderson (Newlands Corner), Ashtead Park, Bucklands Nurseries, Mayfield Lavender and Apps Court Farm.
Don't forget to dispose of your old Christmas tree responsibly
Every year, thousands of us buy real Christmas trees that are then discarded in the New Year, but it is important that these are recycled properly. If real trees end up in landfill, the tree decomposes and releases carbon dioxide as well as producing methane gas, both of which are extremely harmful to the environment. When buying a real tree, it is advised to look for one that is locally produced or grown in the UK with a Forest Stewardship Council certification.
Don't forget to dispose of your old Christmas tree responsibly – check your local waste collection service as some collect trees as part of their roadside collection, or you can take them to your local community recycling centre.
