Surrey County Council’s commitment to tackling domestic abuse and violence has been recognised with White Ribbon accredited status.
White Ribbon UK is part of a global movement aimed at ending male violence against women and girls. The charity works to challenge cultures which lead to harassment, abuse and violence while spreading a message of equality and respect for all.
The award of accredited status recognises steps the county council has already taken to tackle domestic abuse, both among residents and staff who may be experiencing abuse, and commitments to future work. Actions taken include working with partners to provide more emergency refuge accommodation for families escaping domestic abuse, while further plans include introducing independent domestic violence advisers into A&E departments at Surrey’s hospitals.
White Ribbon accredited status entitles organisations to access materials, information, training and networking opportunities and support from the White Ribbon UK team to further develop local strategies and action plans.
Sinead Mooney, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Public Health, said: “With our partners we will focus on preventing domestic abuse and ensuring all children, young people and adults who are affected can access the right information, services and support at the right time and in the right place.
“In Surrey our vision is for every adult and child experiencing domestic abuse to be seen, safe and heard and free from the harm caused by the behaviour of perpetrators. White Ribbon accredited status recognises the work we’re already doing and will assist us in going further to tackle this scourge in our society.”
