The new headquarters of Highways England - the company that will run motorways and major A roads – was opened last Thursday by Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin and Guildford’s MP Anne Milton.
Anne said: “It is great to see Highways England HQ in Guildford. Transport is a huge issue locally and having the new Highways Agency here means they will personally experience the rollercoaster of road problems we all have to deal with."
The new company, which replaces the Highways Agency on 1 April, marks a step change in how England’s roads are maintained and managed and will be responsible for delivering more than £15 billion of investment by 2021.
It will have longer-term funding to be able to plan ahead and invest in skills and equipment to speed up essential work. The move is part of a radical package of road reform that is expected to save the taxpayer at least £2.6 billion over the next 10 years.
