Local MP, Anne Milton, has met several carers this week who along with national charities came to the Houses of Parliament to highlight the priceless contribution carers make in our communities. National Carers Week runs from 8-14 June and brings together Carers UK, Age UK, Carers Trust, Independent Age, Macmillan Cancer Support and MS Society. It is part of a wider campaign to raise awareness of the 6.5 million people in the UK who care for a partner, relative or friend.
Anne said: "Ever since I worked as a district nurse in the 1980s there have been ongoing efforts to make sure that carers get the support they need. Carers make a hugely valuable contribution to society and they need support to carry on the work they do. In many cases the most important need is to identify exactly who they are. Many carers are uncomplaining and hidden in our communities, struggling on without any support. This can sometimes be at huge cost to their own physical and mental health and wellbeing."
Anne added: "It is crucial that the help and support available reaches those who most need it. That is why I am supporting this initiative to encourage services in the Guildford constituency to think about the needs of carers and help make sure they don’t miss out on support."
