The snow and freezing temperatures did not deter guests from attending the launch of a new charity, the Topic of Cancer, at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Surrey. Topic of Cancer was formed to support and fund the essential research into cancer immunotherapy that Professor Hardev Pandha and his research team at the University are conducting. The cutting-edge research is looking at therapies that will teach the body to use its own immune system to destroy cancer cells, leaving the surrounding healthy cells and tissues unharmed. Prostate, breast, brain, bladder, skin, kidney, ovary and lung cancers are so far responding well in research trials.
Anne Milton, MP for Guildford who attended the launch said, “I would like to congratulate the immunotherapy research team at Surrey University. The dedication and focus that Professor Pandha has brought is striking to all who have met him. Clinical trials within their dedicated facility, have produced recognition from far afield and I know we will see even more.”
Nigel Lewis Baker, who was diagnosed with advanced incurable prostate cancer 6 years ago, is co-founder of the charity. He said “Topic of Cancer is a very personal charity. Unlike many larger charities our donors and supporters know exactly where every penny is spent and can become familiar with the names of our truly incredible team who are actually performing the research. With the help of our fantastic Regional Ambassadors who are based across 10 counties, we hope to not only establish cancer support groups, but also raise funds to continue this vital research in the battle against cancer”.
